My other moms (Listography 2011}.

Each Wednesday, Danielle, @ Elleinad Spir, Emily, @ Notorious MLE, and myself are working our way through the lists of Listography 2011.

List # 19... an ode to Mother's Day.

My 'mom hat' is worn pretty thin this week, which translates to:  Short on time, & short on energy.  So, I'm just going to go ahead & jump right in...

List your favorite t.v. moms.

1)
Clair Huxtable~ She had her career. She loved her children. But her marriage remained at the top of her list.

2.)
Lucy Ricardo~ She didn't take herself too seriously.  Each day was a new adventue, & perfectionism was never on the agenda.

3.)
June Cleaver~ She made perfect look easy, which we all know otherwise... but it's still fun to fantasize.

4.)
Livia Soprano~ I gotta kick outta her.  Plus, this passive-aggressive, guilt-trippin' mom made me feel a little better about my own mothering skills.

5.)
Lucille Bluth~ Never a dull moment with this 'vodka-for-breakfast' mama.

6.)
Marion Cunningham ("Mrs. C")~ She was a mom not only to her own children, but to all of the kids... Always patient, non-judgmental, knew when to be naive, when to be tough, & never a witty comment left behind.

7, 8, 9, & 10.)
Julia, Sarah, Camille, & Kristina (the Parenthood crew)~ It's only fitting that the best show on the air, would also have the best t.v. moms of all.  I could not pick a favorite if I tried.  They are an 'as-true-as-you-can-get' representation of determination, confidence, insecurity, love, fear, strength, charm, talent- and they're all pretty darn cute.  Hot mammas.

And I can't forget about my own {real-life} mom who made it possible for me to watch & be inspired by many of these shows in the first place.  Yes, the t.v. & I were pretty tight.  But hey, I turned out okay- maybe even better for having lots of moms, rather than just the one.  Good thing, since my kids had a "healthy dose" of t.v. tonight, as I intended to power through my post... but instead fell asleep on my computer.  Which means, I'm up at 1:29am writing it instead.  At this point, any mom that can put dinner on the table, get their kids in bed at a decent hour, & keep up with their laundry is my personal hero.  Oh, the woes of motherhood...

So, please share.  Which television mamas touched your heart?  Let us know in the comments, or head on over to Danielle's to link up your post.

  1. Great post and made me think about all those great TY mums out there. This makes me want to watch Parenthood when I get home. Saw Brady Bunch Mum in a play in LA and she looked lovely - very face-lifted but sweet sounding and a beautiful voice.

  4. Great list Torrie. You listed the ones I would have. Claire from the Crosby show has to be my favorite though. I grew up watching that show and it was a staple in our house. They all just make me laugh and I can picture the whole episode of them coming down the balcony singing for Claire on her birthday with the littlest girl screaming a song! Too funny! Hope you have a better day today~! Xo

  6. Two of my favorite TV moms are probably Tami Taylor ("Friday Night Lights") and Lorelai Gilmore ("Gilmore Girls"). Neither of them is perfect, but they're both strong women who did what they thought was best for their children.

  7. oh my goodness I love this list!! I also think it's hilarious you included Livia Soprano. Lucille Bluth? definitely. she taught me vodka can go bad if you don't drink it up after it's opened. and Clair & Lucy, totally. :)

  8. June C. was such a great tv mom...I also adore Edith from All in the Family {the fact that she constantly stood by Archies side through all the shenanigans makes her an angel! :) }

  12. I love Lucy. I used to collect Lucy stuff. I have it at my parents' house. I have a cookie jar of her car with her and Ricky in it and a bunch of other Lucy stuff. :)

  13. The Cosby Show was one of two shows we were allowed to watch when I was a kid. When I was younger it was the kids' antics that I loved watching but as I got older I found a new appreciation for Claire and Cliff's relationship and how it set the solid foundation for the rest of the family. So she'd probably be my top TV mom, too.

  14. Yeah, I miss the Cosby Show, too. Great list, though mine would most definitely not include No. 4!! Great character but so not a favorite of mine. I was glad when she was gone. I must start watching Parenthood too, if only because Lorelai, er Lauren Graham, from Gilmore Girls, is on it. And yes, my list would include Lorelai. I so loved that show and thought she was the best and coolest mom ever. Who else? I'm sure it will come to me as I"m falling asleep tonight, but hopefully not on my computer! Ah, we blogging mamas. As busy as we are, we keep adding more things to our to-do list.

  15. Yes to Clair Huxtable for exactly the reasons that you listed! No way to Mrs. Soprano! And, like a number of other people have suggested, Lorelai Gilmore. :)
