Less is more {Listography 2011}.

Each Wednesday, Danielle, @ Elleinad Spir, Emily, @ Notorious MLE, and myself are working our way through the lists of Listography 2011.

Simplicity and repose are the qualities that measure the true value of any work of art.
- Frank Lloyd Wright

And that is the approach that I am taking with this week's list-

List your favorite artists.

When it comes to art... and artists, the word "favorite" is daunting.  It's truly an impossible task.  The number of artists that I have been, and continue to be inspired by, is immeasurable.  I find inspiration from many sources- from Monet, to Emily Dickinson, to Bono, to Stephen King... to my dad's tattoo artist.  So, instead of pin-pointing favorites, I'll share a handful of creators that have made a personal impact, in one [art]form or another.

John Hughes (filmmaker)

Mr. Mom, National Lampoon's Vacation, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Some Kind of Wonderful, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, The Great Outdoors, Uncle Buck, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Home Alone...

Need I say more???

A photographer that doesn't take himself too seriously, and stays off of the 'creative high horse' that so many "pros" perch themselves upon... as seen in these articles- 1) here, and 2) here... 2 of the most influential and inspiring articles I've read, in regards to photography.

Sheryl Crow (musician)

Although I enjoy her music, it was an interview that I saw a couple of years ago that captivated me... watch it.

Johnny Cash (musician)

After the movie I wanted to learn more about the Man in Black.... so I read his book- Cash: The Autobiography- and fell in love.  His honesty, authenticity, depth, spirituality, his soul (which shone through in his words), was simply enthralling.

A creative genius... with a sense of humor (and a purpose).

And my 2 personal favorite artists...

Jacob & Hailey Sessions

 (a watercolor created by Hailey)

Who are your favorite artists??  If you have a list of your own, link up below (and then check out the others')!  If you don't have a post to link up, share with a comment :).

  1. Love this, Torrie. I could never ever choose favorite artists. They are ever-changing for me. With art, I like so many different types. When we lived in New Orleans, we would go to the many galleries ever weekend and just stand in awe of the work...same for the jazz musicians in clubs or performing on a street corner. I also love strolling though the MoMA, but could spend hours perusing Etsy. I mean just with Etsy alone, I have hundreds of favorite artists.

With regards to music, that also changes by the minute for me. Sure there are the classic favorites, but then on any given day Lil' Wayne could be my favorite...it just depends on my mood. :) Same goes for movies or anything that could be perceived as art. I could never choose! :D

  2. Ferris: Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Jake Ryan: Happy Birthday Samantha, make a wish!

Oh, Jake Ryan, how I pined for you and Ferris, that's the best piece of advice I had heard at 14.

    Great post, Torrie!!!!

  4. Great List!

The links for David would not open for me :(

    Here's another quote for you:

When I am working on a problem, I never think about beauty.
I only think of how to solve the problem.
But, when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful,
    I know it is wrong.

  8. I didn't participate in the lists this time: my poor, sick brain could not even come up with one artist. Now that I'm reading yours I'm nodding and coming up with others.

But as always, I really enjoyed reading yours! And including your childrens' pictures made me unexpectedly tear up. It's so sweet!

  9. First of all, Jacob and Hailey are so talented! Those are both beautiful! Secondly, Ferris Bueller's Day off is my favorite movie of all time and I agree that John Hughes is an amazing artist for creating it.

  10. Love the listography post! If I get another snow day I might just have the time to participate next time! LOL. When I was in 5th grade I memorized the lines to Ferris Bueller. You know when the teacher asks "Bueller? Bueller?" In college, it became my fav party trick. :)
    Best,
    Tina

  11. Perfect quote and I love that you included Charles Schulz. I could be totally wrong about this, but I think I heard that he was a SacTown resident.

  23. You little ones are so very talented. Seriously, hope you are framing some of their masterpieces. Love children's art work. It's so real and pure.

P.S. Let me know how the fam likes the pudding. Emerson did not like it at all! More for me!

  25. I saw that interview with Sheryl. I had not honestly really liked her until I saw it. Such a simple and great list. The children's work is wonderful and like Estelle said you should definitely be framing some of them. Pure is exactly what I was thinking! Have a great weekend my friend!
