Places to go & people to see [& food to eat] {Listography 2011}.

Each Wednesday, Emily, @ Notorious MLE, Danielle, @ Elleinad Spir, and myself are working our way through the lists of Listography 2011.

Let's start out with a little complaining (on my part, anyways... you can feel free to complain in the comment section, if you'd like to join in).

Forming this list was hard.  None of them have been easy.  They've all taken an embarrassingly long time to develop.  The topics in which I think I'll be able to whip up lists in minutes seem to be the most challenging... to make large enough, to narrow down, to decide what to embellish on... what not to embellish on, and to share with the world (referring to my 30 readers, not exactly "the world") that I've never before stopped to think for longer than 5 minutes regarding certain topics, or that I have no clue who my favorite artists are... or sports figures.

Ahhh.  Felt good to get that off my chest.

On the other hand, like I mentioned here, this little project- and the fact that it is so difficult for me- is proving to be exactly what I need... to slow down, to reflect, to prioritize.  Which brings me to today's list-

List places you’d like to visit.

A couple of reasons why this was especially tough.
  1. There are a gazillion places I'd like to visit.  It's served as a reminder that in order to make this hefty list come to fruition (on one income), we need to make it a major priority- to to create a plan, and SAVE.
  2.  Another confession:  I'm extremely geographically challenged (another goal- under the general category of "Learn").  I see and hear about places all of the time that subliminally get added into the 'to-see' list, but when I stopped to form a the list, this ignorance 'learning gap' was brought to the surface, big time.

Some places below are based primarily on visiting family, others are based on what I think we'd really enjoy, and most of them are shamelessly based on what type of food I want to experience, or indulge in (hence- the little addendum to my title).  Okay, without further scrutinizing, here are "a few" places that I'd like to visit... or revisit.

(*items in parenthesis are just the top-of-mind parts that I'd like to see... for each place, there's so much more I want to explore!)

Inside of the US...
 Outside of the US...

This list is definitely not one that I could accomplish in the near future, but it is one in which I didn't want to shorten, or hold back.  Although a bit overwhelming, it feels good to have it in writing.  Because that's where any plan begins... with an imagination... with a dream - right?

I'm especially excited to hear about the places that you'd like to visit someday.  I'm sure I'll be adding some of them to this list.  So, if you have a list of your own, head over to Emily's and link up (and of course check out the others that have joined us!)... Or, no post?  Not a problem.  Just share with a comment :).

  1. Every time I sit to write a list I think that I'm never going to be able to write it....then I end up rambling on and on!

  2. OMG.
After reading your list I feel a little ashamed about mine.
Maybe I am not putting enough time, effort and thought into it ?
Oh well, I have to say that now that I think of it I might add the Great Wall of China to it....

  3. Great list! I went on safari in the Serengeti a couple summers ago. It was incredible! Definitely go! We drove ourselves around (i was with some missionaries who had been several times so they were pros ha) and camped overnight. Try to go during the migration. We saw thousands of wildebeest and zebras migrating. We saw 10 lions, a lion with a kill, hundreds of elephants and giraffes, tons of hippos and my list could go on and on...it was a great trip! I want to go back so badly. Thanks for bringing up all these fun memories for me :) I may have to blog about my trip soon since I didn't have my blog back then!

  4. @Lorena Lorena, like I said on your blog... not the case, in my opinion. I did put a TON of thought into this, but it was because I needed to- on a personal level.

  5. @Karissa Jade Ferguson Hi Karissa! Wow. Thank you so much for this comment. It's funny, because in writing this, my rational part of my brain kept telling the other part (the creative part) to be more realistic... to not dream too big. In light of that, I almost excluded the safari from the list. But your comment affirms that it's exactly where it needs to be. With your personal description, it makes me want to work that much harder to make this particular destination a reality. Again- thank you!

  7. Torrie!! Your lists are always so . . . pretty! Mine are so LAME in comparison. But we seem to have at least one in common each time I've done it.

My grandmother, who's never been more that a few hundred miles from her home in MT has always dreamed of going on a safari. It's so unexpected! I wish I could've made it happen for her somehow.

  8. I love your list, Torrie. I'm dying to go to Greece and on an African Safari. Those are the two at the top of my list. But I'm not sure I'll make it anytime soon. Next on my actual list is Hawaii- Gabe and I are hoping to go in July when he finishes his fellowship. YAY! I agree that lists like these are always harder than I think they'd be. But I love taking the time to reflect on these things.

  16. I SO want to participate in this and I just can't find the time! What a great list! Do you have the book "500 places to take your kids before they grow up?" It's so great. Hubby and I did Spain before we had the tot. There is a lot of eating (and drinking) to do! I recently added Iceland to my list and we are taking the tot to Alaska (hopefully) this summer.
    Best,
    Tina

  20. What a fantastic list! I need to sit down and really give this some thought. There are so many places I would love to visit!

  21. I love your list! I plan on joining in on Listography 2011, starting from the begining, but a month late!
I have been very blessed to have traveled a lot before settling down and getting married. Now I think of the places I want to return to with my kids! I think the first two will be Australia (including the GBR)and Africa (including safari). With the exception of the LONG flights for both of these destinations, both are very doable without completely breaking the bank. We hope to start traveling internationally with our kids once they get a couple of years older (so they remember it!).
We've also got the the book "500 places to take your kids" and have started checking some off. Fun book!

  26. @Stephanie Italy is my DREAM vacation. Yes, I have an aunt & uncle that are the same- huge travelers. They always go off peak season, so their vacations are doable/affordable for them.

  27. wow. i would love to go to any of those places! and i think it's more than acceptable to choose places based on the food!! food is a language in itself, a way to experience a culture. :)
