Perspective.

Jacob was recognized today for "setting and outstanding example for his peers."

Jacob's week did not start off so well.  With the exception of one, he lost all of his Nintendo DS games.  He's pretty disappointed, understandably.  He's not a kid who plays video games around the clock (of course he would, if I let him).  But still.  He's 12, and to him, those games are important.

Long story short, his case (which had all of the games inside) was stolen.

He's intensely hoping... hoping that the thief gets caught... that his games will be returned- or at the very least, that we'll be reimbursed.

After repeated, detailed questions about "the search process", of which I have no clue for the most part, I had to break the news that it's probably not gonna happen.

To which he sadly stated, "I wish they didn't do this."

Then, off to continue his homework.

A little while later, he walked into my room and sighed, "I thought of two other games that were in the bag."  (The day before, I suggested that he make a list of missing games.)

Then, off to continue his homework.

When I tucked him in, I noticed that he had mustered up every coin that he owns, placed in a [small] pile in the middle of his floor.

In the midst of all of this drama, we decided to look through his new telescope for the first time.  Since we returned from our trip, he'd been anxiously waiting to set it up.  And I am so glad we did.  We saw the moon, up close and personal.  We saw Jupiter, and it's moons!  And in 6 days, we'll be out there again (upon Jacob's request) to view the full moon.

The worry is still there, the frustration- the disappointment.  But, somehow, it wasn't so BIG anymore.

{And then they go and change his sign on him (now, an Aquarius!)... What's a boy to do?? :)}

  3. Oh how sad that happened to him. I know exactly how he felt because I got my purse stolen when I was 13 and it felt like the end of the world to me. However, he is so lucky to have a mom like you who takes interest in the things he likes and looks at the moon and stars with him. That is awesome and a great way to help him put things into perspective.

  6. Oh, I am so very sorry to hear about that. What a sad experience for him (and you) to have to deal with. There is something so dirty about being stolen from. It's just rotten.

I do hope you guys can keep enjoying that telescope. Sounds like a very cool diversion.

  7. What a beautiful story; there is sadness, of course, with the loss of his toys, but wonder with the coins and the moon.

  8. Poor guy! I had my wallet and jacket stolen in high school one year. I spent months trying to figure out who did it. Turns out it was two (jealous) girls that were my so-called friends! I learned a lot from that experience.

Then several years ago, I had my camera bag stolen with all of my cameras, lenses, film, filters, cables, etc. It was so heartbreaking and much of it was irreplaceable.

Unfortunately life comes with loss, most which is out of our control. But I fully believe in Karma. Those that steal will get what they deserve eventually.

  9. Aw. Poor guy. Don't you wish you could somehow protect them from that kind of stuff? The worst is watching your sweet, trusting child find out that people can be selfish and not always kind.

I'm glad you guys were able to share that moment and begin to put the disappointment behind him.

  10. ((hugs)) for Jacob! An unfortunate life lesson, but he seems to be handling it well.
Yay for the awesome telescope diversion! It sounds like it's a pretty powerful model~ I bet you all will have loads of fun with it!

  11. We just had something stolen too and the feeling of, for lack of a better word, injustice is just so irritating. I don't want to be bothered by it but I am! I'm feeling your son's pain, if it's any consolation.

    Have a good weekend.

  13. Oh no! I'm so sorry that someone stole all his video games. That must be so horrible for him. But I love that seeing the moon made him feel better. You're an amazing mom, Torrie with really sweet kids.

  17. Torrie-oh such a sweet post and I feel so bad for Jacob. It really makes no sense when people steal like that. But, it's nice you turned a negative situation into a more positive one. You have a great kiddo there :) hope you have a lovely weekend!!!!

  19. why are people so mean? I'm an adult and I totally understand and feel like Jacob. My laptop computer was stolen from my hotel room when I went to a blogging conference. So many pictures and memories were in that computer. i was devastated. But my kids were not taken from me and that's well.... yeah...no need to explain obviously. I'm sorry Jacob's things were stolen from him. I hope he gets it back.
