Desperate measures.

This picture has no relation to my post- other than the fact that those pants are total workout motivators... LOVE.

Today, I am celebrating not only the arrival of the weekend, but the completion of 2 weeks of boot camp.  Since I shared my initial suffering and pain on day 1, it's only fair that I follow up with an update.  And a quick shout out to the gal who initially inspired my decision.  After reading about Sarah's experience (and seeing the results!), I found an amazing deal on a boot camp in my area, and signed up (not without huge amounts of hesitation and anxiety, I might add).  I related so very much with Sarah, that there was no denying that this was the route that I needed to take.  And her "after" picture simply sealed the deal.  Sometimes, proof is necessary.

Well, It hasn't been easy.  Scratch that.  It's been hard... very hard.  I was utterly out of shape in every which way- strength, cardio, endurance, stamina- and I've been inactive for far too long.  She (the evil monster trainer) is working every single muscle in my body... muscles that I had no idea existed.  And I'm surrounded by a class full of powerhouse women, not only older, but 1,000 times stronger.  I've been fairly thin for my entire life, but as you know- thinness does not equate with fitness.  And that has become more apparent than ever before.

But you've heard the story (or experienced a similar one yourself) enough times before to know what I'm going to say next.  It's all worth it.  After only 2 weeks, the soreness is still there (oh, is it there), but it's accompanied by an overwhelming sense of power... strength... energy... confidence.   And a drive to eat well, to get the sleep I need (to wake up at the crack of dawn), to move more- to push myself beyond my preconceived notions of weakness... beyond my [far-too-low] self-imposed limits.

Aside from the workouts though, they've recommended a simple solution to the ongoing issue of eating your vegetables.  And this element has been equally important in the positive results that I've experienced.

The Addition Diet.

Not a diet, in the typical sense of the word- in which you cut food out.  Here, you bring food in.  It's not a new concept, but a simple one, and a good reminder to fill up on healthy foods, leaving less room for the junk.

Here are the rules (in their words exactly):

Rule #1 - Breakfast:  Huge Smoothie

3 types of fruit and 3 big handfuls of spinach (Example would be 1 orange, 1 apple, 1 cup frozen blueberries, spinach)
Cut up the fruit, stick it in the blender with a little water and liquefy once that is all mixed up add in 1 handful at a time of the spinach (till you have three big handfuls in there).  This should make a large smoothie.  Drink until you are full.  If you’re not full make another one.

*Don't let the spinach scare you; you won't even know it's there besides the color.

One hour later or before you eat anything else, eat 2-4ozs of turkey or chicken breast.

Rule #2 -  Lunch:  Big Salad

Commit to yourself that come hell or high water you will do your best to have a large salad for lunch every day.  Try to get as much variety of raw vegetables as you can find.

Rule #3 - Dinner:  Hippocrates Soup

Begin each dinner with a bowl of the following soup recipe:

3-4 stalks celery
Small amount of parsley
1 ½ pounds of tomatoes
2 medium onions
2 small leeks
2-3 cloves of garlic
1 pound of potatoes

Chop up the above ingredients and put them in a big pot.  Cover with distilled water and cook for 2 hours.  It is recommended that you keep the leftovers for no more than 2 days.  If you need to freeze a portion, you can do that.

If you want to be even better for dinner, have a lean protein, steamed vegetable and dinner salad.  But the real rule to focus on is including the soup.  Every night.  It is a cleansing, detoxifying soup and you are not to add any salt.

Without a doubt, I am all for taking the 'all-is-okay-in-moderation' approach to eating (as long as you're active).  But like Stephanie shared last week, sometimes "desperate times call for desperate measures."  And since I couldn't seem to get my act together any other way, desperate measures were in order.

  2. One Word- AWE! I am in awe. You are doing so good with this bootcamp and not that I would have expected anything less, but with kids and the things us moms have to do everyday the fact that you have been able to keep this up is incredible. I would suppose if I could see you I would be jealous of your slick new look. I bet you are one powerhouse now yourself.

I have always been pretty good with the exercise portion of my life just because I love love to run and play tennis and workout but your post today doesn't have to just apply to working out and eating right. You have inspired and motivated me to get my butt in high gear on other things I have so easily put off on my Need to Do List. Thanks girl and I hope you have a wonderful weekend. As far as the soup goes, I will have to try it- the smoothie- never been a fan so I will trust ya on that one! XO

  4. You ROCK!

I am reminded of Dr. Perricone and his diet instructions, which we try to follow, sometimes with more success than other times.

  5. As I sit here eating tomatoes, mini sweet bell peppers, and hummus for breakfast (because that's what my body was craving, really! oh my, and it tastes good!) I am sharing in your feeling of good health! Yes it is HARD sometimes, but usually those things worthwhile are, yes? so excited for you. (love the pants too btw!)

p.s. thanks for the shout out. =)

  6. That's so awesome Torrie! I've been thinking about you and boot camp. I've got the working out thing down I just need to change my diet - last time after baby I just had to add more veggies and the weight just came off naturally. It's frustrating to KNOW how to do it but not finding yourself doing it.

  7. I'm so impressed with your bootcamp routine, Torrie! It's so true that it's all worth it and that getting to the first class is the hardest. For me, it's all worth it because I love feeling strong. It's such a liberating feeling. Have a great weekend!

  10. @The Suburb Experiment Couldn't have said it better myself. That was the most illogical part of all of this. I've heard and seen success stories time and time again... but I just was NOT taking action!

Ever since your comment a while back- when you talked about your workout routine (and your post not long after), I've always thought- she's lucky... she has the hard part down (+ she's self motivated! + she *likes exercising!). =)

  11. I continue to be floored, appreciative, and positively *smitten with everyone's support and encouragement.

From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU. =)

  12. Woo two weeks down! I'm in total need of a little boot camp, but it totally scares me, because I've never done anything like it before and in fact don't even like going to the gym. However, the end result of more energy, feeling better, getting more sleep, etc. sounds exactly like what I need. Thanks for sharing your experience so far!

  13. So excited for you, Torrie! You're awesome!

4 months in, I'm still loving boot camp something fierce. Best thing I've ever done.

  17. Good on you - go for it! (Also love the jeans!) The soup sounds yummy - I think I might have to add chicken stock and chicken to it - would that be allowed? Have a fab weekend!

  19. Good job! I've been trying to do a BodyPump class 2-3 times a week, but that's nothing compared to a boot camp! I do feel stronger, though after the first class I had issues walking down stairs and trying to get up from a sitting position. ;) Thanks for the addition menu...I'm totally going to try it!

  20. Wow! I'm so psyched that you've taken this on and posted about it~ just the motivation I need! I'm also a thin woman who is so unfit it isn't funny. My "get healthy" start-date goal is March 1, so I've been planning how to go about it all. You've helped tremendously!
Keep up the awesome job. I hope to following right along!

  21. @elizabeth / sophisticated pie I was seriously beginning to worry about my constant lack of energy. Problem solved. Night & day difference. I was scared too for the same reason... I'd never done anything like this, and when I start getting nervous about the next class, I just remind myself of how good I'll feel when it's over!

  22. @About Last Weekend Of course! I now add a little sea salt after warming it up... simply needs it, and I don't see why it would hurt, if I'm going to eat dinner (with salt!) right after.

  23. @ptkate Seriously. I could not (without immense difficulty and pain) sit down, or stand up ... or steer the wheel... or even reach for something on a table in front of me after my first day. It was that bad. They said it'd get better- and it did- thank God. :)

  24. @Karen How cool! I can't wait to hear about your plan/progress... so we can support each other in our goals!!

  25. Wow you did bootcamp? good for you! Don't you feel amazing? Ready to get in the bikini and hit the beach now? And I really love the idea of smoothies for breakfast and healthy salads for lunch. This is typically how I eat in the Spring/summer. Very motivating. OH and that picture? I want that outfit too...esp that crossbody bag.

  26. Trying to play catch-up with posts and failing miserably! I am so late on this, but wow! I am so proud of you! This is so great! I have always wanted to do a bootcamp of some sort, but I am scared to death!! :D I think I have an issue with authority because I hate taking classes and following rules!

Anyway, I love the rules!! This is very inspiring. I have had about a week of comfort food and it is time to get back to the good stuff! I needed to read this post today.

Oh...I thought that was a picture of you at the top!...looks so much like you!
