A very good friend of mine has a daughter that will graduate from high school this month. I, among others, have been asked to share a few "Life tips" that will be part of her graduation present. Having been a psych. major, I tend to have a soft spot, for what I like to call "self-awareness" books. As I glanced at the trusty ol' collection, I pondered over who I'd like to provide a little punch of inspiration to get me started.
Hmmm... Eckhart?... Maya?... Dr. Laura?... Dr. Phil?... Mr. Rogers?... Kermit? (Told you- a soft spot.)
And then, I came across a little pink book, Eat Less Cottage Cheese and More Ice Cream, that happens to be my favorite "self-awareness" book of them all. Any book that tells you to eat more ice cream is right up my alley. In a very short, sweet, and simple way, Erma captures everything that I would like to share as a life tip to a graduating student, a friend, and especially as a reminder to myself. I'll leave you with one of my favorites from this lovely little book.
"If I had my life to live over again... When my child kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, 'Later. Now go get washed up for dinner.'"
After a busy month of projects, appointments, and never-ending To-Do's, this touched a little nerve. Okay, time for a some ice cream...and maybe a nightcap too.
Love the website... and your blogs!!! It's so exciting to finally see it up and running. Happy blogging... :)

That's such a sweet lesson. I've never read that book, but I'm always into the idea of having more ice cream.

I was thinking of you today so it is really funny that you mentioned many of our favorite "self help" authors!
ReplyDeleteHere is the quote from "The Shift" by Wayne Dyer that made me think of you today and what you are accomplishing in your life!
"There is nothing wrong in searching for happiness...
But of far more comfort to the soul...
Is something greater than happiness or unhappiness, and that is meaning.
Because meaning transfigures all...
Once what you are doing has for you meaning, it is irrelevant whether you're happy or unhappy. You are content-you are not alone in your Spirit- you belong!"
(Sir Laurens Van Der Post from Hasten Slowly, a film by Mickey Lemle)
Also i have to say my new favorite ice cream is Coffee Biscotte made out of hemp milk (I think the brand it Hemp Cream). I know it sounds crazy but it is really good and dairy free!!!
I love what you wrote to Hilary! Thank you!!!
Christy-
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing that quote. I love it, and definitely want to try your new favorite ice cream. And this is exciting, because I really like your last favorite- w/ coconut milk...so this must be GOOD.
That is so true about our kids. Sometimes it seems like we are so busy with things that don't matter as much as we think they do. We miss the little things. I have never read that book but I think I may have to go get it. It sounds inspiring.
ReplyDeleteWelcome Melissa! I love that I get to connect w/ you via the blog world (totally OUT of SB's territory). My fellow foodie...and a cake baker after my own heart:).
