Infinite power of words.

"You are a force of nature."
{favorite coffee mug, & a daily dose of infinitely powerful words.}

our weekend was a bit {a lot} hectic and rushedthe kind of weekend where you feel like you need a do-over.

so i decided to enter my reader in pursuit of a little 'boost'... only a couple of posts in and- i already found it.

karina's thought-provoking sentiments ~ and melissa's powerful affirmations.

their words have lit up my soul.  in a matter of minutes.

i'm reminded.  awakened.  empowered.

ready to leave sunday in the dust.

right where it belongs.

Back in sync.

Have you heard of the Voxer app?  I'm not a big "app" personI barely have [or use] any, in fact.  But this one's good.  It essentially turns your phone into a walkie-talkie.  Need I say more??

You press a button, talk~ while it records your voice, and it's immediately "sent" to the recipient.  And not in a loud/intrusive way.  In other words, you don't have to worry about interrupting them in a meeting {or worse- in bed}.

Here's why I love it.  I have a friend who lives far away.  For a while we talked on the phone whenever we could... sent emails... texts.  But as the kids have gotten older, and as she switched jobs, our schedules always clashed.  We tried everything to stay in touch.  Long {update} emails.  Scheduled phone conversations.  Neither worked.  It was an endless game of phone tag.

Then she discovered Voxer.  It has literally rekindled our friendship.  I fully recognize how cheesy-commercially this is sounding.  But it's true.  Of course it doesn't omit the need for real-live / face-to-face conversation. And it might not be necessary for all- or even most friendships, but we could never reach each other!  It wasn't that we were too busy to make time for each other- or that we didn't want to put any effort forth.  It was just that when one of us was available, the other wasn't.  When one had extra time on their hands to send long email updates, the other didn't even have time to read 'em, let alone reply to them.  And we could never seem to get caught up~ or in sync.

When we want to talk now, we 'send a vox'... When we're free, we listen, and respondSometimes it's just a quick 'good mornin'... sometimes it's an ask for advice... other times it's an oh-my-god-i'm-going-to-lose-my-mind-if-i-don't-talk-to-someone.  {And can I tell you just how therapeutic that last one can be??}

The pursuit of happiness.

Last week was Ryan's final week at Starbucks Coffee Company.  Definitely the end of an era, for him- and for us (a combined 27 years, between the two of us).  The week was filled with goodbyes & a bit of coffee-amassing (we'll definitely miss our free pound per week)... Goodbyes, tax appointments, colds & fevers (that started with Hailey, & ended with me, in a big way), homework assignments... packing, playlists, & car repairs.  The boys were headed to the snow on Friday for an ice climbing trip.  Needless to say, it was a busy week.  He literally turned in his [company-owned] laptop and [practically new, company-owned iphone 5], picked up his final paycheck, & they were on their way.

So Hailey and I fended for ourselves for a few days...

a little recovering, pizza & a movie {in bed~ the highlight of our weekend, for sure :)}, a bit of valentine shoppin', a high-adventure girl-scout-cookie-selling-dog-walk, an art walk, a day of cleaning (for all of the cleaning that was not done in the preceding days), & a big pot of short ribs... a welcome home dinner, a farewell to the week- to 27 years- and a hello to a new adventure.

the aforementioned valentine's shoppin'... not surprisingly, my mom considered valentine's day another "big holiday."
so do i
commercialism/forced affection/hallmark hoopla... bring it on.

~~~
a few of the treats i bought for the kids (not really valentine related, but sentimental nonetheless)...
...the book above (for my earnest, curious, book-lovin' boy)... a little set of worry dolls for each (do you remember these? thanks to mrs. habit i was reminded of them, & their simple wonder)... the little pig game!! (do you remember this?? thanks to kelle l was reminded of them as well, & their simple wonder ;))... a "beef-jerky-chocolate confection" (hmmmmm.) a little hello kitty pink cocoa (why not?), & of course, a few conversation starters.
pure nostalgia.
Next year.
as i check in on instagram, and the other social media 'sources of inspiration' time-suckers sites, i continue to add to my 'next-year' list.  the 'next year' list that is 1/2 full of items/pictures/projects from last year that were supposed to be implemented this year.
well, the tree is up, shining bright.  the other decorations are well on their way.  new outdoor lights {'old-fashioned' ones... a 'to-do-this-year' task that was actually done} have been purchased... leon has arrived, and is monitoring as close as ever.  *homemade card supplies were ordered weeks ago...
...but still untouched.  advent calendars just put out yesterday... on the 6th of december. not the creative-thoughtful-diy kind either.  the cheap-easy-low-grade-chocolate-filled-paper-box kind.
looks like those pine cones may have to wait one more year before their trims are painted white as snow.  and those christmas card supplies might just be perfect for next year's holiday cards.
ryan's in his last wave of classes, life is chaotic, our lists are never even closed to being checked off..... and 'in the big scheme of things' it's alright.  and it IS temporary (a necessary- daily- reminder).
but speaking of next year...
i saw a gorgeous olive wreath the other day that i'd love to try my hand at creating my own version...
image via
and also, a magnolia leaf one...
both trees in which we have.  both very simple and seemingly doable.
next year.  for sure.
...on the "art" of pinning {& not *doing}.
Over the summer, I took a little break from "information-collecting" of any and all sorts- virtual pinning, magazine tearing/clipping/pinning, blog post 'bookmarking'...
Sure I was busy with the kids at home 24-7... vacations... Instagram... life away from the computer... But really- I was just tired of pinning images of "inspiration" up on those boards, without turning a single one into fruition.  Tired of clipping a craft idea that I had no intention or time to create- or bookmarking a recipe that I knew I couldn't eat (due to our temporary diet restrictions).  I couldn't possibly pin another item onto an already overly full board/plate/LIFE.
After our major spring purge, I realized that our cabinets & cupboards weren't the only areas that needed sorting, tossing, "refining."
Aside from summer's huge reward of spending more time with the kids, & road tripping our way to 'wine country'- it provided a time to take a much needed step away, to put an end to the madness of the piles and piles of magazines, the insane amount of emails [literally] flooding into my inbox each day...
To sort my way through the information, the inspiration, the aspiration- until I was left with almost nothing.  Which meant a lot of deleting.  A hell of a lot of unsubscribing.  A lot less sharing, committing, piling, stacking, saving, filing, PINNING...
But as of Thursday, I was ready.
Ready to dive in.  Into magazine reading... article clipping... meal-planning (I can't even begin to express how nice it has felt over the past few days to have a little order when it comes to our meals- to not stand aimlessly in my kitchen at 5:30- or later- each night and wonder WHAT IS FOR DINNER).  Into my long-lost love that is Pinterest.
It's funny how intrusive it can all become- all of the craft ideas, surefire cleaning techniques, the surefire parenting techniques, the "how-to" tutorials, the party-planning/picnic-throwing/meal-making ideas,- how overwhelming... how excessive...
Yet on the other hand, how incredibly stirring, useful, motivating, uplifting it can also be.
As long as there's a little doing action involved.
{When it comes to the 'food & recipe category,' I will say- there was plenty of doing going on this weekend.  Those [articles/pins/bookmarks] are usually the fastest to pile up after all.}
A party to remember.
You know when you're invited to a dinner party by someone you truly admire?  Someone that you know beyond a shadow of a doubt will make you feel right at home... all the while chatting it up with everyone else... assembling that simple, yet perfect meal, refilling your wine glass- or better yet, casually leaving you to your own devices, so you may fill as you please.  Someone who knows that the key to a successful party not in the execution alone... that the guests in attendance play an unprecedented part in the entire affair... their unique style, their spark, their stories, their spirit.  It's all infectious... in a good way.  A way that makes you want to keep on smiling, laughing, sharing... and pouring.
Well, this is exactly how Ryan & I feel to be a part of Estelle's new site~ Pink Moon Daily.  A daily source of information & inspiration on clean, green, and sustainable living.
I've mentioned, several times, just how much I admire this gal, and I am excited and honored to have the opportunity to contribute and collaborate- with Estelle, and with an amazing, creative, and all-around crush-worthy group of ladies.
I would absolutely love it if you followed along for yourselfI know that this will be a daily spot in which I will be uplifted, informed, and inspired... and I have a feeling you will too.
Happy-makers.
Instagram.
Ever since it became available to Android users, I've become completely & utterly ADDICTED.
And it's not just the cool filters, or the ability to share, but the quick hits of inspiration I {need} get from browsing through others' pics ...while waiting in the school pick-up line, in between toilet-scrubbing- when I need a little jolt of inspiration.
That said, I posted a pic of two books I planned on cracking open, but due to last week's craziness, had yet to do so.
{...two books that were highly recommended from two of my favorite ladies.}
So, last night I finally had a chance to start.  First up- Parisian Chic (because I needed a little "light" reading after a non-stop day).  I'm only a few pages in, and already in love.  I think you need to read it too.  Seriously.  So we can be "chic" together.  Here's a lil' excerpt...
The Parison loves discovering new labels, especially if they're creative and affordably priced.  She will rave about a great find in the humble supermarket (yes, really!  Parisans adore the Monoprix chain), but never fights to be first with the latest high-priced bag, especially not if it's waiting-list only (so vulgar...).  Her wardrobe is a clever mix of cheap and affordable buys, holiday purchases, and a handful of luxury pieces.  Impossible to tell if her jeans or denim jacket are from Gap, Notify, H&M, or Hermes!  She won't blow her salary on the latest "must-have"- she can't afford it, for one talent as a fashion stylist:  why spend so much on something she could have designed herself?  The Parisan knows she will never go out of style.  She sweeps fashion aside (but she always sports a telling detail gleaned from the latest trends).  It's part of her charm.
Pure FUN.
Between this, Simplicity Parenting, Instagram, and getting caught up on this lovely lady's blog- so that when these books are finished, I can begin her book (already ready & waiting on my bookshelf, along with a box of tissues in which I know for a fact that I will need)... I'm totally covered this weekend- entertainment-wise.
Now if only I can figure out how to keep the rest of my family busy, while I lay and bed & read all weekend.................
What's on your nightstand?  And more importantly- are YOU on Instagram??
{if you are, I would highly suggest following the aforementioned "lovely lady's" feeda total happy-maker :)}
The countdown's ON.
aside from re-uniting with pinterest (how could i ever, ever claim to be "too busy" to spend some quality early morning-when-everyone-else-is-fast-asleep pinning time??), making the [5-min.] trek to target to purchase the product that i am hoping will change the course of my [& hailey's] up-dos forever, selling pushing girl scout cookies with the troop... for 4 hours... the true highlight was a night out with my husband.
a friend turned 40, & celebrated new orleans-style... our first ever crawfish boil...
... hurricanes a' plenty... batches & batches of jambalaya, a fancy cake, lots of beads...
a nice way to "get away" without actually stepping foot on an airplane.
...but also a little preview of our upcoming weekend in which we really do get to get away... five days & counting.
{it is my last week of "#35" afterall.  i plan on making it a good one.}
hope your monday treats you well... or you treat it well.  either-or :).
Quality of life.
i had the pleasure of hanging out with new & old blogger pals this past week.
emily was in town for just a day, but she happily extended her return flight just so that she could spend an evening with katrina (who em introduced to me on her last LA visit... & so happy she did) & i.  jenn was here on a family vacation & set a night aside to meet me- and one of her other blogging friends, casie... the more the merrier.
it never ceases to amaze me that- after a few minutes of "initiation"- we jump right in, talking about anything & everything- as if we haven't skipped a beat... laughing, story-telling, listening... talking a bit more in depth about that job interview, or dilemma that they'd referenced in a post- but was a bit too personal to share in full online.  2 lovely evenings in which i walked away a brighter, bolder, better person.
lately, i've found myself in [social] situations that are underlined with negativity, judgement, criticism, & flat-out-rudeness.  life's just too short for that nonsense.  my well-being is far better suited with real friends, true character...
& an accompanying cocktail- a jalapeno pepino margarita, let's say- or a basil gimlet- never hurts.
{...cause it's been said that trying new things is also good for your well-being :)}
Green velvet cupcakes... & a list.
Monday night, after Jacob came home from a boy scout meeting, he walked over with a smirk (you know, the kind that older brothers get when they have "dirt" to spill regarding their younger siblings) on his face, and handed me a paper that he'd found laying on the art table.
It was a list created earlier that afternoon by my little list-making daughter.  Here is what it said (written in all cursive btw... as you can see above, she likes to write in cursive)...
List [for] when Jacob's gone
  1. see if Mommy's on the computer
  2. if not, ask for Club Penguin [an online computer game that "ALL the girls" are playing]
  3. if is, ask for Wii
  4. or for T.V.
You see, she didn't actually do anything wrong per se.  But Jacob knows how we feel about being "plugged in" 24/7.  How we don't feel that it's necessary to take 5 minutes to grab the D.S. (and all of its accompaniments) in order to ensure *entertainment* on a 2-minute car ride.  How we don't always welcome the 10 calls a day by 8 year old girls phoning to request that Hailey stop everything she's doing- not so that they can have an actual CONVERSATION mind you- so that she can "log in" to the world of penguins & puffle pets.
And he's heard us openly discuss when we've realized that the pendulum has swung a little too far in the wrong direction... a few too many meals eaten around the television rather than around the table... far too many nights of me frantically catching up on my computer (blogs, twitter, pinterest, facebook, e-mail- although that last one always seems to be deemed the lowest on the priority list)- or spending far too long composing that "perfect" post... and way too many undiscerning "yes's" in response to the "can we watch..." or "can we play [insert gaming system of choice]..."  {cause sometimes if I have a mound of dishes to do, or heaven-forbid- a long list of unchecked tweets- it is just easier to say YES}
Well, looks like it's time for a little pendulum shift.  The one in which we remind our kids {& ourselves} of just how much there is to DO & enjoy that does not involve a plug.
So, yesterday- after Hailey came home from school, I did- as usual- have a mound of dishes to do.  But this time, I asked her to stay and keep me company.  We chatted it up... and by the time we were finished, I couldn't get her to stop talking :).  A welcome change from the lethargic, short-spoken girl- who has gradually stopped asking me to play a board game with her... stopped asking if she can help me cook... stopped asking me what we're going to do together when Jacob leaves for his meeting.
We talked... we laughed... we formed a new list (of the grocery variety), we headed to the store, and after that, we baked.
{gettin' into the st. patrick's day spirit a little early, since jacob will be camping on the big day... (i keep reminding ryan that st. patrick's day is, in fact, a "big" holiday)}
DISCLAIMER:  These are dangerously delicious.  I only had a bite of one, and I'm scrambling to give at least 1/2 of them away before temptation prevails.
green velvet cupcakes
*adapted from organic and chic
makes 24 cupcakes (or 25, in our case)
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tsp vinegar
2 tsp baking soda
2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
2 cups sugar
3 large eggs
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1 1/2 tbsp vanilla extract
2 tbsp professional green food coloring (I used 1 tbsp of Wilton leaf green icing, & 1 of AmeriColor forest green gel paste... left over from here and here.)
vanilla whipped buttercream (recipe below)
Preheat the oven to 350.  Place liners in 2 muffin pans for 24 cupcakes.  Set aside.
In a small bowl, mix the cocoa powder, vinegar, and baking soda together.  Set aside.
Beat the butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, 3-4 minutes.
Add the eggs, one at a time, and continue mixing until well blended.  Mix in the buttermilk, vanilla, and food coloring.  Then add the cocoa powder mixture.
With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the dry ingredients to the buttermilk mixture.
Pour the batter into the prepared pans.
Bake for 14-16 minutes, checking with a toothpick.
Let cool completely in pan for 10 minutes.  Then set on a wire rack and let cool completely.
Frost with the vanilla whipped buttercream...
vanilla whipped buttercream
makes 3 1/2 cups frosting, enough to frost and fill one 8-inch layer cake or to frost 24 cupcakes
2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 cup whole milk
1/4 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tbsp vanilla extract
Cream the butter on medium speed, 3 to 5 minutes, in a standing mixer or with a hand mixer until soft, about 30 seconds.  Add the sugar and beat on high speed until light and fluffy, 5-7 minutes.
In a small saucepan, combine 1/4 cup of the milk, the flour, and the vanilla extract, and whisk until there are no lumps.  Over medium heat, slowly add the remaining 3/4 cup milk, whisking constantly, and heat until the mixture comes to a low boil.  Then reduce the heat to low and keep whisking for a few more minutes, until the mixture starts to thicken.
Immediately remove the pan from the heat, but keep stirring.  (After you have removed the pan from the heat, the mixture will continue to cook for a minute or two on its own.  If you overheat it and get small lumps, try to whisk vigorously to get them out, or pass the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve.)  If necessary, place the pan over a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process and allow the mixture to cool.
Once the milk mixture has thickened, set it aside to cool to room temperature.  You can stick it in the freezer to rush the cooling.
With the mixer on low speed, slowly pour the milk mixture into the butter-sugar mixture.  Increase the speed to medium and beat until the frosting is light and fluffy, 3 to 5 minutes.
...and enjoy each & every luscious bite.
Tread carefully.
Somewhere in between my crazy past life & the present- still crazy, but a different-kind-of-crazy life, I went through sort of a "hermit" phase.  I didn't want to be tied to anything... to the computer, to my phone, to staying on top of trends... movies... pta calendars...  I rarely (pretty much never) checked email, barely answered my own phone- and texting??  Forget about it.  Just wanted to watch my few favorite shows, immerse myself in the kitchen, & spend time with the ones I love.  Didn't have a need to get the latest n' greatest device... social networking was far from the scope of my daily to-do lists.  I mean really far.
Well, I'll be honest.  I kinda liked it.  Just me & my little family... my dinosaur computer... & my hot pink RAZR.
But it wasn't until I started blogging (or actually- reading other blogs) that I fully grasped just how BEHIND I had gotten since I'd parted ways with my 'work laptop'... my treo... my real-life-social-network.  As I've shared here- in a way- I'm not in any hurry, and have no plan to be ahead of each & every [or any] curve.  Yet, at the same time, we've been playing the game of catch-up {pretty heavily}.
Catching up on movies, music, books, people, phones, gadgets, beauty products, you-name-it.  This weekend, our [Ryan's] mission was rewiring- reconfiguring- streaming... I won't bore you with details, but I will say- IT'S A MADDENING PROCESS.  Will I be ever-so-happy to fiiiiiiiiinally watch Downton Abbey- OH, I mean to STREAM Downtown Abbey from our television... to access our music on one central nework???  Of course I will.  But part of me really, really misses those dinosaur-computer-pink-razr-days... the days in which I believed a "BLOGGER" was some scary movie character (not really, but you get the point)...
Maybe it's the fact that I decided to watch a couple of thought-provoking, intense, George Clooney films- two nights in a row... maybe it's the re-wiring hell... the impending mammogram... the billion things on our calendar in the approaching month... the new workout time of 5:30AM... but things are feelin' a little "heavy" around here at the moment.  Maybe I'll stick with wine coolers Family Ties for the next couple a' nights.  Just to stay balanced.
{oh, but in all seriousness- those movies were excellent.}
