Eat your heart out.

  (from the show that gave football an entirely new meaning)
 (...but don't ask me which team i'm rooting for.)

I may not know which teams are playing, but I do know we'll have a full house, full hearts, and a very full table.

...No baked beans this year {even though they were amazing~ i'd highly recommend}. This year is all about the wings, or drumsticks, rather.  I've yet to try either recipe- but how could you go wrong with a "spicy, sweet, salty" Sriracha glaze- or an authentic "warm up your belly" Jamaican jerk chicken (from one of my new[-to-me] favorite food blogs)?...diligently testing this recipe and this one tonight, cause the super bowl [menu] is serious business.  And I'd hate to put out anything but a winning dish.

...But really, sriracha, fresh ginger, brown sugar...

Can't lose.

Let's picnic.

as of sunday, her birthday is officially over.

happy to report, the party was a success.  we kept it sweet & simple this year... 'a backyard picnic.'

here's how it all went down.
...

an extremely excited party-lovin', birthday-lovin' 9 yr. old.

prepped & labeled sandwiches {took their order when they arrived}.

strawberry lemonade.

a slip 'n slide...

& a big ol' beach ball.

{take-home} picnic baskets filled with 'the goods'.

an extremely sweet group of gals.

a good patch of grass, a few blankets, and lots of shade.

a good-natured brother who played the role of "canvas" for the talented young artists.

collective "face" painting.

and of course, the handee-dandee blow-up pool :).

now, full-force ahead onto vacation planning, which will most definitely include many, many picnics.  the best part about summer, if you ask me.  food, sunshine, nature... swoon.

A check-in, a recap, & a slight addendum.

well, i'm knee-deep in party-planning [CLEANING] mode for this little cutie's 'backyard-picnic' party.  her actual birthday was such a perfect 'hailey-day'... a mellow, but full day with just ryan, jacob, my mom and her husband...

it all started with a donut - not just any donut- the best donut, then onward and upward to farrell's and next, just a few doors down, to color me mine... a big ol' sundae, a quiet ceramic-painting session with her and jacob, in which we chatted and admired their heavy focus and artistic talent... topped off with the long-awaited-totally-giddy present opening, and of course- the remainder of summer strawberry cake.  yep.  a pretty happy birthday it was.

although the day is done, we still have a party to throw, one a little less quiet... one that will include a few more family members, a handful of friends... lots of little picnic baskets, of course- a slip n' slide and every other "pool"-related item we own (our feeble attempt to make them forget about the reality that there is in fact, no pool),
{i realize i'm going a little link-crazy here, but as of late- instagram seems to be the only 'account' that i can somewhat maintain :)}, & most definitely some type of summery strawberry treat to officially mark the occasion.

{speaking of 'summer strawberry treats' i decided to link the aforementioned strawberry cake up as last week's tried & true recipe.  i realized that it is the 4th time i've made it, the third time i've mentioned it, but have yet to write anything about it... and although it's super easy, there's one important point  for those of you who are interested in trying it out for yourself- which i highly recommend.  i updated the post with the following note...}

*not a recipe i'm trying for the first time, i'm still using it as this week's 'tried & true', because it is so incredibly good (and easy- & perfect for summer), and i wanted it to be officially represented on THE LIST.

a quick *cook's note... if you want the strawberries to stay on top, as opposed to sinking into the cake (making them invisible until sliced & consumed), then the barley flour that she recommends using along with the white flour is key.  last summer, i made this cake a few times- the first with white only, then the second with white only, but higher-stacked strawberries (thinking this might've been the issue)... sunken strawberries on both occasions.  i finally purchased barley flour and low & behold- those babies stayed *afloat*.

...which for me, was in fact key, since it just makes the cake so darn pretty :).

{i'm assuming another dense flour would also work, but i've yet to try}

NINE.

 It's my beautiful "baby" girl's birthday today!!!

So we spent the weekend doing a few of her favorite things, and today- we're ready to party ourselves silly.

 {cooking... & a big favorite... eating :)}

 {mickey mouse pancakes!}

 {time in the "pool"... time with her brother (a HUGE favorite), & of course, time laughing at silly kona (who's finally feeling better btw!)}

{her 'birthday dinner' of choice... spaghetti n' meatballs}

And, today we're off to do even more eating at the quintessential birthday destination.

...Sleeping Beauty just woke up (& just to clarify, I'm not referring to Kona- who is still in fact sleeping :)).

The countdown's ON.

aside from re-uniting with pinterest (how could i ever, ever claim to be "too busy" to spend some quality early morning-when-everyone-else-is-fast-asleep pinning time??), making the [5-min.] trek to target to purchase the product that i am hoping will change the course of my [& hailey's] up-dos forever, selling pushing girl scout cookies with the troop... for 4 hours... the true highlight was a night out with my husband.

a friend turned 40, & celebrated new orleans-style... our first ever crawfish boil...

... hurricanes a' plenty... batches & batches of jambalaya, a fancy cake, lots of beads...

a nice way to "get away" without actually stepping foot on an airplane.

...but also a little preview of our upcoming weekend in which we really do get to get away... five days & counting.

{it is my last week of "#35" afterall.  i plan on making it a good one.}

hope your monday treats you well... or you treat it well.  either-or :).

Fabulous fun for everyone.

Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour... "an incredibly magical place that justifies an entirely separate post."

Well, as promised, here is that post.

We tried to go last month with the intention of "testing" it out to see if it was in fact suitable for the celebration of Jacob's 14th birthday.  Of course I knew for a fact that it was indeed suitable.  It was thee. place. to. be. when you had a birthday to celebrate, when you wanted a big ol' sundae, or when you wanted to be wildly entertained by men & women in skimmer hats-  parading around the place- beating drums, blowing whistles, ringing bells, blasting sirens- all in an effort to reach the final destination of that lucky boy or girl.  And by "big ol' sundae" I mean BIG OL' SUNDAE... I'm talkin' huge bowls with 30 scoops of ice cream, erupting volcanoes, zoo characters... delivered by multiple servers- carried on stretchers- all accompanying a special reward if/when fully consumed.  The ultimate challenge.

Well, eventually Chuck E. Cheese took over, and Farrell's closed.  Until recently.  It's BACK.  And as you can see above, we're not the only ones who want to relive those childhood memories.  We were smart this time though.  We got there before the doors opened, stood in line, & when 11- hit, we were seated right away.  Happy times...

{the gibson girl & her date.}

{chocolate coke... not sure quite what he expected}

{look of horror when he realizes that embarrassment is inevitable for the birthday boy}

{and heeeere comes the parade...}

{nowhere to hide when asked to stand up on the table- in a crowded restaurant & dance}

{he was a good sport}

{apparently, the complimentary sundae just wouldn't cut it}

{let me introduce you to the "pig's trough"}

{they managed to devour every little bit}

{... which resulted in further embarrassment- another visit from the "parade crew" :)}

Gameday prep.

After leaving the corporate world, I shared with my cousin that my primary goal was to move beyond CLUELESS in the kitchen learn how to cook... not just the basics- the "whole enchillada" (as my grandpa used to say).

She suggested that I immediately set my dvr to record 2 shows.  Giada's & Tyler's.  Why not Ina as well, some may wonder?  Who knows.  I sure didn't.  I don't believe I had ever seen a food network program, and surely didn't know any of its featured chefs.  It actually worked perfect.  Although I loved them both, Ryan (who often watched too) resonated more with Tyler's style of cooking, and I, with Giada.  But really, who am I kidding?  He enjoyed watching Giada just as much as I did.  I'm sure of it.  ...Then again, what guy wouldn't??  Anyways, I'm digressing.

She also gifted me with a subscription to Fine Cooking.  She mentioned that this was her absolute favorite food magazine... the only one that she keeps in it's entirety (each and every issue)- in tact for future reference.  And I couldn't agree more.  The recipes are written with incredible detail (but not so much that you feel like you're reading a camera instruction manual).  The focus is always on technique, rather than style.  Tips, substitutions, and strategies are always included.  The recipes range from simple ways to use a specific ingredient to- open, adaptable, complex, and sophisticated. {Case in point- I'll forever rely on my 2007 Thanksgiving issue to get me through the day.}

Unfortunately, I no longer receive the magazine.  I refuse to allow myself to sign up for any new subscriptions- until I can unbury myself and/or work my way through the existing PILES.  {& this is not a magazine to offer discounted-i-beg-you-to-renew rates... otherwise, I'd have been sucked in to renewal long ago}

That said, this week's new recipe is a prime example of the necessity of our 2012 resolution.  And besides that...  Superbowl is quickly approaching, my friends.  And we all know that it's really all about the food.  Right?  Right.

{we usually 'fancy it up' a bit- one year, a greek-themed menu, last year, grilled pizza galore... this year- we're goin' old-school.  hot dogs n' beans (& all of the usual suspects- chips, dips, carb-fest-salads...).  so of course, I had to test the beans out, and they were in fact "the best" baked beans I've ever had.}

{"best-ever"} boston baked beans

yields about 7 cups

1 lb navy beans, yellow-eye beans, or other dried white beans (I used navy)
1/4 lb salt pork, rind removed in one piece and reserved meat cut into 1/4-inch dice
1 medium onion (5-6 oz), cut into 1/2-inch dice
1 tsp finely chopped garlic
2 tbs dark molasses (not blackstrap) (I used grandma's original, as dark version was not a/v)
2 tbs pure maple syrup
3 tbs heinz chile sauce or tomato ketchup (I used chile sauce)
2 tbs dijon mustard
1 tbs worcestershire sauce
freshly ground pepper
1 tbs apple cider vinegar

Sort through the beans to make sure there are no little stones and then put them in a large bowl or pot.  Add enough cold water to cover the beans by 2 inches and let soak overnight.  (Alternatively, put the beans in a 4-qt saucepan.  Add enough cold water to cover by 2 inches and bring just to a boil.  Remove from the heat and soak for 2 hrs.)

Drain the beans well, tilting the colander instead of shaking it to gently extract the water and protect the beans' skins.

Position a rack in the center of the oven and heat the oven to 350.  Heat a large dutch oven or other heavy 5 qt. pot over medium heat.  Add the diced salt pork and cook to a crisp, golden color, letting most of the fat render, about 10 minutes.  Add the onion and garlic and cook until it begins to soften, about 5 minutes.

Add 4 cups water, the molasses, maple syrup, chile sauce or ketchup, mustard, worcestershire sauce, and pepper to taste.  Stire well to combine.  Increase the heat to high and bring to a boil.  Add the drained beans and the reserved pork rind and wait for the boil to return.  Cover the pot and transfer to the oven.

After the beans have been in the oven for 10 minutes, turn the heat down to 300.  After 1 hour, check and add water to keep the beans barely covered.  Check again every hour.  You may need to add up to 1 cup water for navy beans and 1 1/2 cups water for yellow-eye beans, but be wary of making them too watery, especially near the end of cooking.  The beans are ready when they're very soft and tender yet still retain their shape, 2-2 1/2 hrs. for navy beans; 3 1/3 hrs. for yellow-eye beans.

Remove the beans from the oven and discard the pork rind.  Add the vinegar and season the beans with more pepper, if desired.  Stir the beans gently; as you stir, the starches will be released and the baked beans will become lightly thickened.  Don't overmix when they're this hot.  Let them sit for at least 20 minutes before serving.  They can also be cooled completely, refrigerated, and then gently reheated.

*the only adaption that I made is that I did not add any salt to the beans (the pork salt provided enough salt), therefore I omitted the option/addition of salt from the above recipe.

LAST, BUT SURELY NOT LEAST...

Head over to see Stephanie's scrumptious recipe... from the one & only Ina Garten~ butternut squash salad with warm cider vinaigrette... definitely a step up from the mayonnaise-based salads I'll be devouring in a couple a' weeks :).

All work & [some] play.

I'm happy to report that we're all caught up on sleep and ready to take on the early mornings, proper bedtimes, and routines (we've never been good at these last two, but swear to change each year).  The mound of paperwork is cleared.  Supplies bought.  Laundry DONE.  Friday Night Lights... 3 seasons in and only 2 1/2 more to go.  Priorities straight.

Amidst cleaning, paperwork- and television, we celebrated a couple of birthdays... and played the funnest* games EVER.  I realize 'fun & games' are not at the top of everyone's mind bright & early on Monday morning, but seriously- keep these in mind if you need to buy a gift for a family, a teenager, or that relative in which you have no idea what to buy- or if you're ever looking for an activity that is both simple (unlike some of the other fun, but long & somewhat complicated group games out there), enjoyable, and laughter-inducing for both kids & adults... the savvy & not-so-savvy player.

Hope you leave room for some play in your week :).

*I am well aware that "funnest" is not actually a word.

Eat like a man {Listography 2011}.

Each Wednesday, Emily, @ Notorious MLE, Danielle, @ Elleinad Spir, and myself are working our way through the lists of Listography 2011.

Image scanned from The Sopranos Family Cookbook.

Have you heard of Esquire's blog, Eat Like a Man?  Well, when it comes to this week's Listography topic- List your favorite foods & things to find at a BBQ- this term immediately came to mind.  Although I love a good macaroni salad- & I it's a rare day when I turn my back on a margarita- the MEAT takes full precedence here.  If I walk into a backyard party & see any of the above items on the grill (preferably all, because how can one really be expected to choose between a hot dog & a hamburger??)- then I'm one happy gal.  A gal who's clearly not thinking about her girlish figure.

So there you have it.  Protein.  Lots of it.

You?  Let us know what area you'd be hovering over- in the comments, or @ Danielle's place if you've got a BBQ-related post to share.

My little firecracker.

Tomorrow, she’s turning 8.

Perfectly fitting that she was born in the midst of sunshine & sparklers… of independence & high spirits… of block parties & parades.

 Self-determined.  Persistent.  Warm-hearted.  Open-hearted.  Happy.  Colorful.  Full of life.

...Looking forward to a weekend of your favorites- manicures, mac & cheese, popsicles, & parties.
