This weekend was all about gettin' into the spirit... the Halloween spirit.
In our home- 'til the month of October has passed- we hold off on the pretty autumn leaf garlands, the harvest basket of pumpkins n' gourds, the festive seasonal wreaths, the colorful ears of Indian corn.
The "fall bin" & the "Halloween bin" used to be one and the same. But it never felt quite right hanging a hooded & gauzed grim reaper- amidst a black-feather-covered chandelier- above a table filled with pretty leaf-shaped candle holders & all sorts of other 'autumnal bliss.' Somehow comfy-cozy-bounty-warm just doesn't mix with creepy-crawly-spooky-tacky...
So this month's reserved for cobwebs & skeletons... ghosts & ghouls... black & silver... purple & orange. The traditional beef stew & crusty bread were savored... candles were lit... The Munsters & Scooby-Doo were watched... cider & wine were poured... My mom joined in on the fun, and as of today, the first of October~ our house has officially been spooked.
Now onto the really spooky part... figuring out the Halloween costumes.
We put our decorations out yesterday! All 5 of them lol.
ReplyDeleteI’m just catching up on ig… and literally just saw your picture!! …glad someone else appreciates “Halloween” décor :).
Deleteyou planted the seeds for making beef stew tonight so I'm doing it, 100 degree weather and all ;)
ReplyDeletelove it!! it is one of my favorite traditions… even if the decorating part is not as “fun” as can be (as sometimes [often] is the case_... we can always count on a hearty [calming :)] bowl of stew! {the wine helps too ;)}
Deletei'm hiding as long as possible from the costume making...mermaid is her desire. oh boy.
ReplyDeleteoh boy is right! but oooh, she will make one cuuute mermaid :)... {we have officially set saturday aside for the 'costume-prepping' day. ryan is away, so it'll be just the kids & i... think i'll need a mimosa [or 2] beforehand ;)}.
DeleteYou guys are so fun. I love it.
ReplyDeleteSpooky possums, as Dame Edna Everage would say. And waiaait! Beef stew and crusty bread - Oh you're killing me, stews are my favourite.
ReplyDeletei am having a hard time getting in the spirit. my kids will be the first to point out my bah humbug-ish attitude. they are craving pumpkins and vampire bats. you know that vampire bats are the only type to suck blood don't you? just ask my 1st grader - apparently that is what he learned in school today.
ReplyDeletei remember when hailey talked non-stop about bats!! fruit-bats this and fruit-bats that...! considering this, i really should know that fact... but my retention is clearly not the greatest... took me forever just to remember the "fruit" part. good luck getting into the spirit... like i said to erin (above), a 'food tradition' always pushes me along :)(i.e. if we decorate, THEN we get to enjoy _______)!
Deletei hate hate hate hate spiders. did i mention i hate spiders? this past weekend a black widow crawled down my girlfirend's trucker cap while we were floating in the pool in the desert. no joke. let's just say, that little f*%#er suffered a quick yet painful death. i want no part of spiders as a form of decoration...
ReplyDeletethat said, i simply adore halloween. and this year we are going to a real (grown up) costume party... i am trying to decide between magot tenebaum and a zombie bride (wearing my gorgeous wedding dress from a decade ago.) decisions decisions.
Eeeewwww…
DeleteI’m right there with ya… I love it. I love that you do too! …& that you dress up- even when there is no party to attend :). But with a party, you’ll be able to go all out!
Both perfect ideas… & can totally picture you in both… can you believe I have NOT seen that movie?? That was the period that we seemed to miss a lot of good movies. Added it to my must-watch list.
You are so cute! Love all your fall prep. It looks like so much fun. I love fall but hate Halloween and Emerson is begging for some decorations. I just may breakdown this weekend...
